Are your workouts not producing the results you want? Do you find yourself easily losing muscle mass, growing tired at the gym, or not looking the way you want to?

If so, you may not be doing the right training to produce the results you desire.

Before you can formulate the perfect workout, first you need to decide what exactly you’re looking for.

Determine What You’re Looking For

  • Muscular Endurance

Endurance is about encouraging and training your muscles to perform for an extended period of time—not just increasing their size. It’s all about building stamina!

Increased muscular endurance can greatly benefit your body and your workout routine. It allows you to complete more repetitions while exercising and can provide you with more energy in day to day life.

  • Muscle Size

If you’re not worried about endurance, you may be looking to increase your muscle mass.

Muscle growth is just as important for your body. Your muscles contribute to your physical strength, organ function, and overall health.

  • Stretch and Tone

Not looking for either of the options above? You may want to go for a stretching and toning workout method.

These are low impact, low intensity workouts that can reduce body fat, increase stamina, and allow for greater flexibility.

Time for Action

Now that you know what you’re looking for, it’s time to put a plan into action. Below, we’ve included some tips to optimize your workout for whatever muscle goal you want to achieve.

Set Ranges:

  • 2-3 sets of 12 to 20 reps will help you build muscular endurance
  • 3-6 sets of 6 to 12 reps build muscular hypertrophy
  • 3-5 sets of 3 to 5 reps build muscular power
  • 2-6 sets of less than 6 reps build muscular strength

Start with 2-3 lb. weights, then work your way up to 5-10. Once you feel comfortable, then move up to 10-20 lb. weights.

For muscular endurance, rest for 30 seconds in between sets.

For muscle size or to stretch and tone, rest for 60-90 seconds in between sets.
